DreamCloud Mattress Review Best Mattress For Comfort
I’m super excited about today’s review since I’ll be taking a look at a few of the newest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as lavish as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper would benefit from it most.
Read on below for my full review of this DreamCloud mattress. Best Mattress For Comfort
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress in a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer structure is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different substances at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact with one another.
Cover: The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. Additionally, it is quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers: Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to stress, so you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it is comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex generally is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also assist in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer: A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main use of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the whole.
After taking a look at the building of this DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils below and experienced a pleasant lift from the springs.
At this time I’d like to note that people of different body types and shapes will feel firmness otherwise. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion also. This will give you a better sense of the firmness range you can expect from the mattress.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the stability of the DreamCloud, giving it an average rating of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it is apparent that this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it is definitely a good bed. As you’ll feel some slight sinking out of the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Instead of just describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I placed a pressure map on top of the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy.
Back: Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the mattress at all. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side: As you can see in the chart above, once I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I still felt supported and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this place.
Stomach: Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and out of the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these places with relative ease. Best Mattress For Comfort
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you will want to know what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around at night. This next test is intended to demonstrate the high level of motion that’s detectable from 1 side of the mattress into another.
To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the opposite side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly larger spikes, I’d still look at the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great alternative for couples.
When purchasing a new mattress, most people want to know whether they’ll feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 lb steel ball, a 50 lb medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are meant to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.
- 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
- 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
- 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
- 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
As you’re likely to experience some immediate sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit on the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a broad range of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Best Mattress For Comfort
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and need to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it’s going to be crucial that you consider the amount of edge support it will provide.
I’m especially interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt as supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam border support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
A lot of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
