DreamCloud Mattress Review Best Mattress For Fibromyalgia 2015
I’m super excited about the current review because I’ll be taking a look at a few of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To determine how well this hybrid lives up to this goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper could benefit from it .
Read on below for my full review of the DreamCloud mattress. Best Mattress For Fibromyalgia 2015
The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to supply the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and lots of comfy pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I’m stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together.
Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a luxuriously soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which supplies the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers: Below the cover, you’ll find three thin layers of foam. While these segments are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also react quickly to stress, so that you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of the three layers is especially important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the inclusion of these tiny ventilations promotes even more cooling.
Pocketed Coils: The bottom layer of foam transitions into the firmer support section of the mattress, which is made up of a pocketed coil system. These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the construction. The coils also aid in regulating temperature as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer: A thin coating of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and giving a sound foundation for the entire.
After taking a look at the construction of this DreamCloud, let us talk about the firmness and texture. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and immediately felt the soft foam of this quilted cover and top layers. My hand sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I started to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a pleasant lift from springs.
At this time I’d like to remember that people of different body shapes and types will feel firmness otherwise. As opposed to giving just my view on the overall firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion also.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of the DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the business standard of 6.5 for moderate firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it is definitely a solid bed. As you’ll feel some slight sinking from the plush foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the core will lift you from this bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my backside, and tummy. You can see the results on the picture below where pressure is represented from blue (low pressure) to red (high pressure).
Back: Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the mattress whatsoever. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me from the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side: As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and hips. However, I felt supported and the top foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this place.
Stomach: Switching over to my stomach, I thought the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and out of the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I managed to transition across these places with relative ease. Best Mattress For Fibromyalgia 2015
If you plan on sharing your bed with a spouse , you’ll want to know what it’ll feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to the other.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the bigger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the four inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the mattress. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I’d still look at the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great alternative for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they’ll feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I put four balls of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 pound medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.
- 6 lb medicine ball: 1.5 inches of sinkage.
- 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
- 50 pound medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
- 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you will hit the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will interest a broad assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers particularly. Best Mattress For Fibromyalgia 2015
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it is going to be crucial for you to consider the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I am particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses that fail to meet the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too dramatic.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam border support around the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
In this position, I wanted to simulate what it would feel like to be sitting on the bed in the morning when you’re lacing up your shoes and getting ready for the day. A lot of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
Sleep Trial: 365 days.
