DreamCloud Mattress Review Best Mattress For Ikea Bunk Bed
I’m super excited about today’s review because I’ll be taking a look at one of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy combines high-density foam with encased coils to get a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I’ve put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what sort of sleeper could benefit from it .

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfy pressure relief.
Given all of the different substances at play here, I’m stoked to dive in these layers to see how well they interact together.
Cover: The cover is made up of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with instant pressure relief.
Foam Layers: Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some pleasing sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so you won’t feel stuck at the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these tiny ventilations encourages even more cooling.
These individually wrapped springs give the bed excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also aid in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer: A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the base of the mattress, with the main function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and feel. I started off by applying light hand pressure to the mattress and instantly felt the soft foam of this quilted cover and top layers. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instantaneous pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a pleasant lift from springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body shapes and types will feel firmness otherwise. Rather than giving just my opinion on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their opinion also.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it is apparent the this mattress is really firm.
I personally gave the bed a 7.5 and agree with the remaining testers that it is definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking from the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils in the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel as if you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Rather than simply describing the feel of this DreamCloud for you, I wanted to provide a visual representation of where somebody may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my backside, and stomach.
Back: Once on my back, my weight was evenly distributed throughout the mattress, so I didn’t feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover provided quality relief in my lumbar region and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side: As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I started to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I felt supported and the very best foam layers relieved what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach: Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a excellent job of lifting my hips up and from the mattress, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these places with relative ease. Best Mattress For Ikea Bunk Bed
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to learn what it will feel like when the other person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the intensity of motion that is detectable from one side of the mattress to the other.
To illustrate this motion transfer, I dropped a 10 pounds. Steel ball from heights of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and measured the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the larger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a little bit of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops reveal slightly larger spikes, I would still consider the mattress to be quite good at isolating motion, as a result of the individually wrapped coils. This means you’re not likely to be overly disturbed by your bed mate’s midnight shimmies, making this a great option for couples.
When purchasing a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel as though they’re sinking”into” the mattress or placing”on top” of it. To picture this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, density and weight are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.
- 10 pound steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
- 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
- 100 pound medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
While you’re going to experience some instant sinkage in the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through these layers, you’ll hit on the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will appeal to a broad assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Best Mattress For Ikea Bunk Bed
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to utilize the entire surface area of the mattress, then it’s going to be crucial for you to think about the quantity of edge support it will provide.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will suffer the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to live up to the edge support of more traditional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the middle . Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a little compression due to the highest foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression at the foam layers, but it didn’t carry over into the wrapped coil system below. This system, along with the polyfoam border support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
A good deal of foam mattresses experience severe compression in this position, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
