DreamCloud Mattress Review Best Mattress For King Size Platform Bed
I am super excited about today’s review because I’ll be taking a look at a few of the latest beds on the market: the DreamCloud hybrid mattress. This bad boy unites high-density foam with encased coils for a sleeping experience that promises to be as luxurious as it is supportive.
To see how well this hybrid lives up to that goal, I have put it through a series of tests to measure its overall comfort and determine what kind of sleeper would benefit from it most.

The DreamCloud features an astoundingly tall profile for a mattress at a whopping 15 inches. The eight-layer construction is broken down into foam and wrapped coil components, which work in tandem to provide the sleeper with a firm innerspring lift and plenty of comfortable pressure relief.
Given all the different materials at play here, I am stoked to dive into these layers to see how well they interact together.
Cover: The cover is composed of a cashmere and polyester blend for a soft feel up top. It’s also quilted with memory foam, which provides the sleeper with immediate pressure relief.
Foam Layers: Below the cover, you will find three thin layers of foam. While these sections are soft to the touch and supply some satisfying sinkage, they also respond quickly to pressure, so that you won’t feel stuck in the mattress. The middle of these three layers is particularly important for the temperature regulation of the DreamCloud as it’s comprised of perforated latex foam. Latex in general is great at dissipating heat, so the addition of these small ventilations promotes even more cooling.
These individually wrapped springs provide the mattress excellent bounce and help to disperse motion throughout the structure. The coils also assist in regulating temperatures as the distances between them allow for continuous air flow.
Foundation Layer: A thin layer of high-density polyfoam lies at the bottom of the mattress, with the most important function of cradling the pocketed coils and providing a solid foundation for the entire.
After taking a look at the construction of the DreamCloud, let’s chat about the firmness and texture. My hands sunk into the material and I could feel some instant pressure relief. Pushing in further, I began to interact with the pocketed coils experienced a pleasant lift from springs.
At this point I’d like to note that individuals of different body types and shapes will feel firmness differently. As opposed to giving just my view on the general firmness level of the DreamCloud, I enlisted three other people to give their view also.
As you can see in the chart above, the testers were pretty much in agreement about the firmness of this DreamCloud, giving it an average score of 7.75. Compare this to the industry standard of 6.5 for medium firmness and it’s apparent that this mattress is pretty firm.
Personally, I gave the bed a 7.5 and concur with the remaining testers that it’s definitely a good bed. While you’ll feel some slight sinking out of the lavish foam top layers, the individually wrapped coils at the center will lift you from this bed and make you feel like you’re sleeping on top of the mattress. Instead of simply describing the feel of the DreamCloud for you, I wanted to give a visual representation of where someone may feel pressure points form while lying on it. To do this, I put a pressure map in addition to the mattress and lied on my back, side, and stomach.
Back: Once in my back, my weight was evenly distributed across the mattress, so I did not feel like I was sinking into the bed at all. The quilted cover supplied quality relief at my lumbar area and the pocketed coils helped to lift me out of the bed and keep my spine in alignment.
Side: As you can see in the chart above, after I rolled onto my side, I began to feel pressure forming at my shoulders and buttocks. However, I felt supported and the very best foam layers alleviated what discomfort I felt in this position.
Stomach: Shifting over to my stomach, I thought that the DreamCloud did a great job of lifting my hips up and from the bed, which is key for stomach sleepers. I must mention that I was able to transition across these places with relative ease. Best Mattress For King Size Platform Bed
If you plan on sharing your bed with a partner, you’ll want to learn what it will feel like when another person crawls out of bed in the morning or tosses around during the night. This next test is meant to demonstrate the high level of motion that is detectable from 1 side of the mattress to another.
To illustrate this movement transfer, I dropped a 10 lb. Steel ball from peaks of 4 inches, 8 inches and 12 inches and quantified the disturbance it caused: the larger the lines, the bigger the disturbance.
The DreamCloud shows a small amount of disturbance for the 4 inch drop, which simulates someone rolling around and adjusting their position on the other side of the bed. While the 8 and 12 inch drops show slightly bigger spikes, I would still look at the mattress to be pretty good at isolating motion, as a result of its individually wrapped coils. This means you’re unlikely to be too disturbed by your bed partner’s midnight shimmies, which makes this a great option for couples.
When buying a new bed, most people want to know whether they will feel like they’re sinking”into” the mattress or laying”on top” of it. To visualize this sinkage, I placed four chunks of varying sizes and densities (a 6 lb medicine ball, a 10 pound steel ball, a 50 pound medicine ball, and a 100 lb medicine ball) on the mattress and measured how much they compressed the surface.
The variations in size, weight and density are supposed to simulate different body parts and different sized sleepers.
- 10 lb steel ball: 2 inches of sinkage.
- 50 lb medicine ball: 4.5 inches of sinkage.
- 100 lb medicine ball: 5.5 inches of sinkage.
As you’re likely to experience some instant sinkage from the soft foam on top, by the time you sink through those layers, you’ll hit the wrapped coils and texture fantastic support. This combo will interest a wide assortment of sleepers, but will satisfy back and stomach sleepers in particular. Best Mattress For King Size Platform Bed
If you are going to share your bed with a partner and wish to utilize the whole surface area of the mattress, it is going to be crucial that you think about the amount of edge support it’ll provide.
I’m particularly interested to see if the DreamCloud will endure the same fate as other compressed bed-in-a-box mattresses which fail to meet the edge support of more conventional innerspring models.
Lying on my back, I felt supported at the edge of the bed as I did in the center. Pressing closer to the side, I experienced a small compression because of the top foam layers, but nothing too spectacular.
Shifting to my side, I once again noticed compression in the foam layers, but it did not carry over into the wrapped coil system under. This system, along with the polyfoam edge support round the mattress, did a great job of supporting my weight.
A good deal of foam mattresses undergo severe compression in this place, but the DreamCloud actually held up fairly well.
